Chattanooga Division I.A.E.I.

 

 

March 11,2003

Chairman Don Fowlkes called the regular Bi-monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Division I.A.E.I. to order at 6:00 P.M. on March 11, 2003 with 78 members and guest present. Announcements were made by Senior Electrical Inspector Lowrance regarding sickness within the City of Chattanooga Inspection Department may reduce inspector response time. David Perry presented the program on Part 1 of Article 250, and did an outstanding job. Questions for Cash resulted in Tim Fowler, Randy McDowell, James Garner, Randy Pennington, and Jeff Duncan each winning $5.00.  Greg Bazemore, and Vernon Dinsmore won $25.00 each by being a member and correctly answering the Question for Cash. Rodney Cole won the $100.00 stag handle Hen and Rooster knife, and Alan Ridley won the portfolio. G.E. Supply, Rhoden Electric Supply, I.B.E.W. Local 175, and Graybar donated other door prizes. The meeting was adjourned at 8:02 P.M. Thanks to all who worked to make the meeting a success. See you at our next meeting May 13, 2003 when the program will be a surprise by the Chattanooga Inspection Department.

May 13, 2003

Chairman Don Fowlkes called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. All inspectors present were asked to introduce themselves. There were 9 Inspectors representing 6 jurisdictions present. 41 members were in attendance. Announcements from the City of Chattanooga included flood damaged areas and how to handle inspections to flood damaged properties.

Amos Lowrance presented the program on the National Electrical Code change process and some significant upcoming changes in the code. PowerPoint was used to better show some of the changes and their effect on the electrical industry. After his presentation Amos Lowrance asked all members present to stand. Mr. Jim Crocker and Chairman Don Fowlkes presented each member present with a Frost Cutlery "Silver Dragon Claw II" knife complements of the Chattanooga Division.

The Questions for Cash resulted in Ronnie Crow, Fred Loyd, Grady Rhoden, and Doug Onby winning $25 for having the correct answer and being a member. Membership pays!

Rick Pullen, Joey Doss, and David Persley won $5.00 each for having the correct answers.

The door prizes  were compliments of the Chattanooga Division and Mike Holt. They included copies of the book "Illustrated changes to the 2002 N.E.C." won by F.E. Bales, Alan Ridley, Joe Doss, and Marion Cannon. David Thorne won a knife, Jim Crocker won a DVD copy of "Illustrated changes to the 2002 N.E.C.", Suel Rievley won a DVD on "Electrical Training". A 2002 N.E.C. code book was won by Jim Garner, and Todd Thomason won a copy of the book "Understanding the N.E.C."

Special members prizes included a Chattanooga Division portfolio won by Roger Coe, A six blade Hen and Rooster knife won by David Perry, and Anthony Brown won the Gerber Multitool.  Congratulations to all our prize winners.

The next meeting will be July 8, 2003 on A.F.C.I.'s. by John Minick of NEMA

July 8, 2003

Chairman Don Fowlkes called the meeting to order at 6:05 P.M. there were 12 Inspectors present representing 5 jurisdictions in 3 states present. A total of 56 members and guest were present. John Minick of N.E.M.A presented the program on Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters. Mr. Minick did an outstanding presentation on the history of why we have A.F.C.I.'s, The technology behind how they work and the level of protection an A.F.C.I. affords. At the conclusion of his presentation there was a session of questions and answers hosted by Mr. Minick.

The Electric Power Board of Chattanooga provided pizzas and the Chattanooga Division provided cokes for all present. Keith Evans, Rick Hardeway, Jay Hicks, and Kevin Garner each won $5.00 in the questions for cash contest. Ronnie Crowe, Roger Coe, and Jack Tarpley each one $25.00 for correctly answering the code question and being an I.A.E.I. member. Membership Pays!

Door prizes were from the Chattanooga Division, Rhoden Electric Supply, and General Electric Industrial Sales Division. Thank you folks for your contributions. The Gerber multi tool was won by David Perry, Doug Barnett won the Hen and Rooster 6 blade Knife, and Danny Mangrum won the Silver Hawk Knife. Congratulations to all that one.

September 9, 2003

 

     Chairman Don Fowlkes called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. with the introduction of local and visiting electrical and sign inspectors. Patrick Donnelly of OnQ Technologies was our guest speaker. His subject was a training program on Home Network Systems.

      Mr. Donnelly discussed installation procedures, maintence, and operations of a complete home network (the wiring from the home electrical system to the low voltage systems. A period of questions and answers followed the presentation.

     Chairman Fowlkes gave the questions for cash and we had six winners - 4 non- members won $5.00 each and 2 members won $25.00 each for a total of $70.00. Membership pays, Join today.

      The Chattanooga Division, Sesco Supply and Chattanooga Electric Supply donated other door prizes. A $100.00 Hen and Rooster Knife and a $75.00 Gerber Multi tool were given away.

      The meeting was closed at 9:00 P.M. with 49 members and guest in attendance.

November 11, 2003

     The November 2003 meeting was called to order by Chairman Don Fowlkes with 167 Inspectors, members and guests present. This was the largest crowd in recent history. The Electric Power Board provided pizza and cokes for refreshments.

      A seminar on Arc Flash/Blast was presented by Mark Christen and Keith Owensby of Chattanooga J.A.T.C. They showed a tape on an Arc Flash/Blast incident and demonstrated Personal Protective Equipment mandated by N.F.P.A.70E.

     Home Depot and Chattanooga Division I.A.E.I donated door prizes. Three non-members correctly answered the Questions for Cash and won $5.00 each while 4 Members answered correctly and won $25.00 each. The $75.00 Gerber knife was won by Vernon Dinsmore and Cletis Lewis won the $100.00  6 blade Hen and Rooster Knife. Membership pays in Chattanooga.

      Chairman Fowlkes solicited volunteers for a Nominating Committee. The meeting was closed at 8:10 P.M. Our next meeting will be a Trade Show and Annual Business meeting on January 13, 2004. Hope to see you there.

 

January 13, 2004

The January 2004 Meeting was called to order by Chairman Don Fowlkes with 87 inspectors, members and guest present. This was our annual trade show and business meeting. We had 13 vendors from all across the country present who were very generous in their donation of door prizes. I think just about everyone present went home with something.  The Nominating Committee presented its report and the slate of new officers was elected. Chairman Fowlkes installed the new incoming Chairman Jack Love. Due to the nature of the meeting there was no Questions for Cash.  Everyone had a great time. I hope to see you at our March 9 meeting.

 

March 9, 2004

     Chairman Jack Love called the meeting to order with13 inspectors present from 6 jurisdictions from 3 states present. A head count revealed a total of 78 members and guest present. David Perry presented an excellent program on "Bonding and Grounding" The Chattanooga Division gave each member present a Frost Cockfighter Trapper Knife.

     Questions for cash resulted in 3 members winning $25.00 and 4 nonmembers winning $5.00 each for correctly answering the code questions. Door prizes were from the Chattanooga Division and Home Depot. Kevin Garner won the Scrimshaw Ivory Case Knife. I.B.E.W. and Contractor certifications were validated and Chairman Love adjourned the meeting.

 

May 11, 2004

Chairman Jack Love called the meeting to order at 6:03 P.M. with 12 inspectors from 6 jurisdictions present. There were a total of 38 members and guests present. Mr. David Perry was not present as he was out of state fishing. The resignation of Mr. Fred Loyd was read and accepted and Mr. Chuck Boyd was appointed as 1st Vice President to fill Mr. Loyds term. Mr. Loyd has accepted employment in the Atlanta area. The association wishes him well.

Mike Sessa of Hilti presented a very good program on fire stopping. There were a total of 4 winners of $25.00 and 2 people present won $5.00 in the “Questions for Cash” contest. Mr. Scott Ball won the $150.00 Case knife. Door prizes were donated by Rhoden Electric Supply, Adman Electric Company and the Chattanooga Division IAEI.

The members present were reminded that our next meeting will be by Mr. John Minick of N.E.M.A.  He will be talking on N.M. Cable. The meeting was closed by Chairman Love at 7:55 . Don’t forget the 2005 N.E.C. Change Seminar at U.T.C. on November 11, 2004 .

 

July 13, 2004

The meeting was called to order by Chairman Jack Love at 6:05 P.M. The various inspectors were introduced with 7 jurisdictions represented.  A total of 84 members and guest were in attendance. Prayer was returned by Burton Perry for the food.  Pizza and cokes were provided by the Chattanooga Division. Chairman Love then introduced Don Fowlkes, Chief Electrical Inspector for the City of Chattanooga, who then made the following announcements:

     Chief Inspector Fowlkes then introduced John Minick of N.E.M.A. who discussed the history of ground rods and where they are today, and then presented an excellent program on N.M. Cable.

     Questions for cash. The following won $25.00 for having the correct answer and being a member; Ronnie Crowe, Rick Pullen,  Anthony Brown, Vernon Dinsmore

The following won $5.00 for having the correct answer only;

Charles Greene, Heath Evans,  Roger Cole,

David Moore, Cletis Lewis, Ben Santos, J. B. Kingsly, W. R. Kight, Steve Jackson, Joe Stallion, Jim Crocker, Rick Pullen, Kirk Sims, David Jones, Brian Owens won Door prizes.

September 14, 2004     

The meeting was called to order at 6:03 P.M. by Vice Chairman Chuck Boyd with 11 inspectors representing 5 jurisdictions and 36 members and guest present.

Chattanooga Chief Electrical Inspector Don Fowlkes made the following announcements:

In calling for inspections;

1.      You must give the correct address.

2.      The call must come from a company representative and they must identify the company they work for.

3.      The call must be made to the inspector not the secretaries.

4.      Permits must be purchased before the job is started.

5.      Don’t call for the inspection before you are ready.

The inspector must approve power before any piece of permanent equipment is energized.

Temporaries must be in good shape (not rusted, falling off the pole, etc.).

If there is more than one meter socket on a property, they must be identified to show the area served.

  Joe Feyka of Cooper-Bussmann presented an excellent program on interrupting ratings. He explained what fault current is, why we should be concerned with interrupting ratings, and how to calculate fault currents.

  There were 4 winners of $5.00 and 1 winner of $25.00 in questions for cash. Joe Gibson won the $150.00 Case Scrimshaw knife.  Door prizes were donated by Lowe’s, the Chattanooga Division, and Cooper-Bussmann. The meeting was adjourned at 8:05 .

 November 11, 2004

 The UTC Student Center was packed with eager students as the Chattanooga Division IAEI held its triennial Code Change Seminar on November 13, 2004 with 36 inspectors from 3 states and a total of 220 members and guest present. Mayor Bob Corker opened the meeting with a welcome from the City of Chattanooga . Councilman Ron Littlefield talked about the future plans and direction of the city.  Mr. John Minick of NEMA did an outstanding job of analyzing the changes and presenting them in an easily understandable format.

 Many Door Prizes were given away at this meeting. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and was richly rewarded with the newfound knowledge of the code changes. Our special thanks go to the Members and officers who worked to make this meeting a success.  Sponsors of the meeting were TENNESCO Electric Supply, NEMA, Chattanooga Division IAEI, and Hixson Sign-A-Rama.

The January 2005 Meeting was called to order by Chairman Jack Love with 52 inspectors, members and guest present. This was our annual trade show and business meeting. We had 12 vendors from all across the country present who were very generous in their donation of door prizes. I think just about everyone present went home with something. The Nominating Committee presented its report and the slate of new officers was elected. . Due to the nature of the meeting there was no Questions for Cash. Everyone had a great time. The regular bi-monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Division was called to order by Amos Lowrance, as Chairman Chuck Boyd was teaching at Chattanooga State . The meeting was on “Significant Code Changes and their Interpretation by the City of Chattanooga ” presented by Amos Lowrance with the interpretations being done by Chief Electrical Inspec to r Fowlkes. We had 11 inspec to rs present representing 2 states and 5 jurisdictions. A to tal of 49 members and guest were present. Jerry Hunt, Jeff Duncan, and Heath Rogers won $5.00 in the questions for cash contest while Suel Rievley, John Stevens, and Vernon Dinsmore won $25.00. Membership pays. The $100.00 Case Scrimshaw knife was won by David Martin. The meeting was closed at 8:15 P.M.

Chattanooga Division IAEI

 

The meeting was called to order by Executive Committee Chairman Don Fowlkes at 6:00 P.M. with 36 members and guest present. Chairman Fowlkes made the following announcements:

November 4, 2005 is the closing date for proposals to the 2008 National Electrical Code.

Jim Crocker is still recovering from Heart Surgery.

The inspection areas in Chattanooga have been changed. The new areas are assigned by zip code.

 

Robert Gregor of Cadweld presented a program on what to do and what not to do with Cadweld’s  products and demonstrated his product. Bill Evia of TUV testing labora to ries presented his company and explained their services.

 

Beverly Pullen, Jay Hicks and Jerry Hunt each won $5.00 each in Questions for Cash and William Young, Anthony Brown, and David Thompson each won $25.00. The $100.00 Case Knife was won by Anthony Brown.. Membership pays in Chattanooga .

Grounding Seminar

 

The meeting was called to order by Amos Lowrance at 8:00 A.M. Announcements were made regarding the adoption of the 2005 N.E.C. by Dallas Rucker Chief Building Official of Chattanooga . Mr. John Minick of N.E.M.A. was introduced and he presented an excellent program on Grounding. There were 53 members and guest present including a number of inspectors from across the tri state area. Refreshments were provided by the Chattanooga Division. Several door prizes were donated by the Chattanooga Division and Tennesco Electric Supply. The meeting was adjourned at 12:15 P.M. with all in attendance receiving 4 hours of continuing education.

Annual Trade Show November 8, 2005

 

The Chattanooga Div is ion held its annual trade show on Tuesday November 8, 2005 with 64 members and guest present. The div is ion also held Pizza night for th is event. 25 large Mr. T’s pizzas quickly d is appeared. There were 9 vendors present showing their wares. Among those represented were Galvan, Appleton , Juno Lighting, Panduit, Ideal, TUV America, Intermatic, Erico, and Rectorseal,

There were more door prizes given out than I have ever seen at a Chattanooga Div is ion meeting. Thanks to all who contributed.

Annual Meeting and 25th Anniversary meeting January 10, 2006

Chattanooga Div is ion IAEI

January 10, 2006

   The meeting was called to order by Chief Electrical Inspector Fowlkes at 6:00 P.M. with 10 inspectors and approximately 50 members and guest present. There were 6 jur is dictions represented from Tennessee and Georgia . Th is was the 20th Anniversary meeting of the div is ion. Six of the founding members still retain their membership. They are Mike Grant, Suel Rievley, Clet is Lew is , David Perry , Richard White, and Amos Lowrance. A clock with inscription was presented to all founding members present.

   The Nominating Committee gave its report and the slate of officers nominated was accepted.

   John Cirillo, of the Electric Power Board announced new policies regarding metering. A d is cussion was held on the 2005 NEC and how it affects Grounding Electrodes. The new inspection request system was explained for online inspection request. This new system is slated to go into operation in February.

Everyone in attendance was given a pocket calculator by the Div is ion. Multiple door prizes were given away.

March 14, 2006

The regular meeting of the Chattanooga Div is ion IAEI was called to order by Board Chairman Don Fowlkes at 5:40 P.M. for prayer offered by David Perry . After thanks was returned the assembled group dove into pizza and cokes provided by Robert K. Howe of S.C.P. Pool Company. The introduction of inspectors revealed that 6 jur is dictions from 3 states were represented at th is meeting for a total of 58 members and guest. The program on Swimming pools was introduced by Don Fowlkes. Amos Lowrance explained bonding and wiring methods for pools and lead a lively d is cussion on the T.I.A. is sued on equipotential bonding by N.F.P.A. David Martin  explained the requirements for branch circuits and feeders to a pool.. The meeting facilitators were Buford Ashley and David Thorne. Door prizes  donated by the Chattanooga Div is ion were given out with several winners. The $100.00 knife was won by Rick Pullen. Membership pays in Chattanooga . The meeting was closed at 8:15 P.M.

The regular bi-monthly meeting of the Chattanooga Division was called to order by Chairman Don Fowlkes at 6:00 P.M. There were inspectors from 8 jurisdictions and 87 members and guest present. Tonight’s program on “Increased electrical safety using 3rd party product certifications” was presented by Don Shields of UL Mr. Shields did a excellent presentation on 3rd party certifications and presented each member present with the new and redesigned UL White Book. Questions for cash resulted in 4 guest winning $5.00 each and 3 members winning $25.00 each. Membership pays in Chattanooga . Numerous door prizes donated by the Chattanooga Division and Sportsman’s Warehouse were given out. The meeting was closed at 8:00 P.M. Thanks to all who worked to make this meeting a success.

November 14, 2006

The Chattanooga Div is ion IAEI held its annual trade show with a smaller than average turnout of vendors. There were 44 members and guest present with 12 inspectors representing 6 different jur is dictions present. Vendors present included representatives from Klein tools, Ideal, Cadweld, Arlington , Kenny clamp, Cheetah, Underwriters Labs, TUV America, and the IAEI. Each vendor was introduced to the group and tell about their products.

 Clet is Lew is received h is 25 year membership certificate from the International office. Chattanooga ’s Chief Fowlkes talked about the use of concrete encased electrodes (Ufer Grounds) and signing of permits.

Door prizes included $25 gift certificates to Lowe’s, Voltage testers, electric screw drivers, Ideal clamp-on digital meter, t shirts, maglites, knives, coffee mugs, wire strippers, book markers, and the new Klein Bottle openers. The $100 knife was won by Jim Crocker. Membership pays in Chattanooga . The meeting was closed by Chairman Crocker at 8:00 P.M.

President Crocker called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. with inspectors from 9 jurisdictions present. There were a total of 48 members and guest present. Mike Seymour and David Morgan from Appleton presented the program on Hazardous Locations.. The program was presented in such a manner as to keep everyone’s rapt attention. After the program the report of the nominating committee was read and accepted. Congratulations to our new officers for 2007. The by-laws were approved as amended by the Board of Directors. Appleton , SRE and the Chattanooga Division donated door prizes to this meeting. The $100.00 knife was won by Cletis Lewis. David Thompson, Darren Caldwell, Rick Quarles, and Johnny Stephenson won $25.00 each while Billy Case, Curtis Sims, and Bo Nunley won $5.00 in Questions for Cash. Membership pays in Chattanooga . The meeting was closed at 8:00P.M.

Chairman Ashley called the meeting to order at 6:00 P.M. with inspectors from 5 jur is dictions present and 57 members and guest present. Jerry Nunnery of Square D introduced David Rewitzer, power systems engineer from Square D in Nashville who explained Available Fault Current, Selective Co-ordination, and Arc Flash to the members and guest present.

Freddie Combs, Jason Helton, Mike Mount, Bo Nunley, and Jenny Hunt won $5.00 each and Darren Caldwell won $25.00 in Questions for Ca$h. David Perry won the $100.00 knife open to members only. Membership pays in Chattanooga Several door prizes donated by the Chattanooga Div is ion and Square D were given away.

The regular meeting of the Chattanooga Division was called to order by President Buford Ashley at 6:01 P.M. with 11 inspectors from 4 jurisdictions represented. There were a total of 44 members and guest present. The topic of discussion was signs.

Amos Lowrance presented information on license requirements, bounding, grounding, and proposed code changes relating to signs. Allen Welton, Chief Sign Inspector for the City of Chattanooga , discussed sign permitting and inspection procedures. David Throne, sign inspector for the City of Chattanooga discussed the mechanical requirements in the I.B.C. for signs. A lively question and answer session followed the discussions. President Ashley presented our speakers with a souvenir knife from the division.

Cornerstone Bank donated a $50 .00 savings bond that was won by Leon Parker. Various other door prizes were donated by the Chattanooga Division and Sierra Tools.

David Thompson, Ronnie Crowe, and Clarence Crump each won $25 and Grady Rhoden, Ricky Brown, Don Sutton, and Gavin Holden each won $5 in playing Questions for Ca$h.

The $100 Hen and Rooster knife was won by David Thorne.  Membership pays in Chattanooga . Hope to see you at our next meeting.

July 10, 2007

The regular meeting of the Chattanooga Division IAEI was called to order by Jim Crocker at 5:45 . The meeting was open early due to it being Pizza night. David Perry returned the thanks for the food and then all present feasted on Pizza from Mr. T’s and Cokes supplied by the Chattanooga Division. There were 50 members and guest in attendance with several inspectors from several jurisdictions from 3 states present.

The program for the night was “What the inspector is looking for” adapted from the program presented by the Mecklenburg , N.C. inspection department. Thanks to Amos Lowrance for presenting the program.

Questions for cash had Ronnie Crow, Bill Horton, Johnny Stephens, Clarence Crump, and David Thompson winning $25 each while Joseph Thompson and Jerry Hunt won $5 dollars. The $100 knife was won by Bill Horton. Membership pays in Chattanooga .

Janurary 8, 2008

The Chattanooga Division held its annual trade show and business meeting on January 8, 2008 with 48 members and guest present. There were 7 vendors in attendance. Some of those present were Shields Electronics, Appleton/ O. Z. Gedney, Panduit, Siemens, Klein tools, and Underwriters Labs.

 

Each vendor explained his products both to individual persons and to the group at once. Door prizes were given by the vendors and the Chattanooga Division. Some of the door prizes included Cheetah totes, Knives, Klein bags, Shirts, Hats. And a Panduit cable tie tool. The $100 Hen and Rooster Knife was won by Darren Caldwell. Membership pays in the Chattanooga Division.

 

The City of Chattanooga Chief Electrical Inspector Don Fowlkes made several announcements on changes of enforcement. Among the changes announced were (1) wire mesh is now accepted by the city for use in an equipotential bonding grid on swimming pools, (2) Fault Current forms are now required on all commercial jobs, (3) plant inspections will restart soon, (4) the City of Chattanooga is undecided on adoption of the 2008 NEC, and (5) a date of enforcement for fixture disconnects (410.73G) and combination AFCI’s (210.12) will soon be announced.

 

The slate of officers for 2008 were announced and confirmed. Congratulations to all the new officers and thanks to the out going officers for your hard work

Chattanooga Division IAEI

 

The meeting was called to order by President Johnny Stephens at 6:02 P.M. There were 103 in attendance and inspectors from 6 jurisdictions and 3 states present. President Stephens introduced Keith Ownesby of the Chattanooga JATC who gave a short talk on the history of NFPA 70E. Mr. Ownesby then introduced Barry Smith of Triad Electric who explained NFPA 70E and showed videos of various cases where proper protective equipment was not used. It was noted that electrocution was the 4th largest killer in the work place.

At the conclusion of the program City of Chattanooga Chief Electrical Inspector Don Fowlkes announced the enforcement of vehicle marking, all vehicles used in the installation must be marked with the license number and name of the company doing the work. He also announced that there were cases of people other than contractors signing permits. As of now the 2008 NEC will not be adopted by the city however 7 items from the 2008 code will be incorporated into the city code due to their significant impact on electrical safety.

The regular meeting of the Chattanooga Div is ion was held on May 13, 2008 with inspectors from 6 jur is dictions present and a total attendance of 41. President Johnny Stephens called the meeting to order at 6:03 . The topic of the meeting was a presentation on swimming and storable pools based on the 2005 NEC with updates for the 2008 by Amos Lowrance.

Door prizes were donated by the Chattanooga Div is ion, Wal-Mart,, Auto Zone, Body Benefits Therapeutic Massage, Real Deal, and Ringgold Electric Supply. Thanks to all who contributed. The 2008 NEC Handbook was won by Clarence Crump. Membership pays.
